Last Week's Scribe Report

WHEN I WAS A KID . . .

The planned visit to Muskegon Community College was scratched at the last minute.  So . . . in keeping with the celebration of the clubs 60th birthday, long time members Tom Boven and yours truly reminisced about the club’s history.

It was somewhat impromptu, though, admittedly, Tom and I had met to identify some of the stories we would or could tell.  We used our full time and still had some items to touch on.

The topics included the history of the founding and character of the initial group which centered around the Spring Lake Country Club, of which most all were members, boating on Spring Lake, and the establishment of the Spring Lake Public School system separate and apart from Grand Haven.

The discussion touched on projects and fundraising efforts.  Activities such as the summer party, Board meetings, and the Rotolympics were highlighted.

Through it all we mentioned famous and infamous members and their contribution, antics, and memorable events.  From our first woman member, Gwen Bergsma, to Ron Redick, a true lowlight, and many in between, are the people who have made up the club and the mosaic of their presence which has made the club what it is today.

It was fun for the presenters and, frankly, we could do another hour of stories we did not get to.  So if you are ever stuck for a program . . .
